US-Iraq War

Bush Administration Credibility:  Why Saddam Hussein should be tried in Hague

by James M. Nordlund.

Given the media blitz on the capture of Saddam Hussein one would hope that the whole truth is revealed.  Americans have a right to know what support previous U.S. Administrations gave Saddam Hussein when he was carrying out all those atrocities.

While Saddam was a tyrant who should never have had his path paved to power, paved it was by President Ronald Reagan and the first President George Bush.  In fact, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfield once said of Saddam, "It's useful to have a relationship with him."

Why, after all, did the White House intervene in 1988 to prevent Congress from imposing targeted sanctions against Saddam following the brutal chemical attack on Halabja? What agreements were made when Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld shook hands with Saddam Hussein in December of 1983?

Yet, even more insidious for democracy in America is the
propaganda by the Bush Administration that has morphed Saddam into Osama bin Laden in the American psyche. Yet, even Bush Administration spokespersons have admitted that neither Saddam Hussein nor the Iraqi people had anything to do
with 9/11.

Saudi Arabia is the homeland of most of the 9/11 terrorists. However, Saudi Arabia is also home to a steady stream of oil to power American cars and enrich the pockets of those who happen to be involved in the oil business, Vice President Dick Cheney, among others.

Unlike the Saudis, Saddam nationalized Iraqi oil fields, shutting American oil profiteers out of the equation. It is telling that the first places the American military secured once they had defeated the ragtag Iraqi Army were the oil fields, leaving museums, schools, government buildings and other cultural landmarks vulnerable to looting and destruction of immense magnitude.

Also, given all the factors involved, will the soon to be manufactured Iraqi justice system be up to the task? It seems preferable to see him tried in the Hague, etc., where the U.N. could do a better job, one that would be more legitimate and accepted as such by the world. As well, it would allow for the potential divulging of important information of our past Administrations' complicity in those atrocities, so Americans can discern why those wars, and the ones the present administration have gotten us, and want to get us, into, are no more then uber-greed and political hegemony run amok; with immeasurable loss to humanity resulting!
