Where is Saddam? Scarlet Pimpernels by Trevor Batten One wonders what would happen if, after the capitulation of Baghdad, Saddam popped up in a friendly capital city, and lodged a claim by some international court for the return of his country. Perhaps bin Ladin could pull a similar trick (as interested party) and demand, on behalf of the Taliban, the return of Afghanistan. Lots of oportunites for novelists! Legal cases obviously offer more chances for fascinating intellectual fencing matches than real punch ups do (although one should not understimate the fine art of military strategy). Saddam giving speeches? by Sophia Barkat This week we heard that Saddam was giving speeches on Video again. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030705/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_536 Knowing that al-Jazeera is not the US Media there is a tendency to not question the authenticity of it. While it well could be Saddam, are we sure it's something he released to Al-Jazeera or something the Bush Administration dug out/confiscated/re-created using Saddam's images? We don't know these things. All we know is that the Bush Administration has been trying to rename the civilian uprising in Iraq against US troops as opposition from Saddam's supporters. As such, the US troops are now having to engage in combat to overcome such uprisings. As it looks bad for the Bush Administration with casualties on both sides and the possibility of something larger to come, they must find a good excuse to give to the US population. Perhaps resurrecting Saddam is useful. For it shows that if Saddam can get on Al Jazeera and deliver speeches there well may be an uprising by Saddam supporters. This will make every slain Iraqi civilian opposed to the Coalition Occupation a Saddam Supporter by way of US Media and Bush Administration propaganda. by Cherrie Lynn Lipsett re: Sophia's post I am sure it is nothing the Bush Administration put out. The last thing they would want is Saddam Hussein telling the Arabs of Iraq to rise up against the Americans occupying their country. The United States government is having enough trouble with the under ground rumor mill in Iraq as it is. There was a mosque blown up in Iraq a couple of days ago and the rumor going around is the United States military did it. They didn't I'm sure and they don't need this bad rumor going around. Yesterday or early today 14 Iraqis training to be police were killed outside the police department where they were being trained and that is also through rumor being blamed on the United States military. Which of course they would not blow up policemen they were training. So I am sure the United States isn't adding to the rumor mill by getting some hopes up Saddam Hussein will come back and take power. Whether it is actually Saddam Hussien's voice is left to be seen. by Sophia Barkat re: Cherrie's post Right. The Coalition Forces don't need to be engaged in a long battle. And the video would insight some rebellion -- whether it's by Saddam loyalists or regular Iraqis tired of being occupied. While most people don't mind the US forces tackling Saddam sympathizers, it would look bad for the Bush Administration to go around killing Iraqi civilians in general. Saying that everyone creating problems falls under "forces loyal to Saddam", as the Media has been for several weeks, makes it look like everyone fighting the Coalition Occupation is a Saddam loyalist. This makes it more acceptable to Americans when the Coalition forces strike back. I think the Bush Administration is intentionally manipulating this to save face in the face of escalating violence in Iraq. by Cherrie Lynn Lipsett re: Sophia's post I think you are right. The Bush Administration is manipulating the type of violence to save face. It was originally just a few Saddam loyalists but is now out of hand and is the general population. There are many reasons. One the electric, water, and trash service has not resumed. There is wide spread crimes, violence and just general lawlessness in the streets. The temperature is rising which makes tempers shorter on both sides. Heat does that. When the people hear of their people fixing the swimming pool and other athletic facilities and then being kicked out by the Americans it does not help any. When the Americans take in prisoners and the people have no idea where their loved one is or how they are being treated this causes more resentment. The situation in Iraq is being handled all wrong and is totally out of hand!! This is TOTALLY THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION'S FAULT. They knew they would have to win the peace after the war and had as I hear NO PLAN WHAT SO EVER FOR WINNING THE PEACE!! That is incompetence and derelict of duty for Bush. He is the one that is in charge. He should have made sure they had a peace plan. I DON'T THINK HE EVEN ASKED ABOUT ONE!!! To have a peace plan that doesn't work is one thing. If you have thought about the peace then you have alternative plans to put into action fast if one plan doesn't work. TO NEVER EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT WINNING THE PEACE OR HAVE A PLAN FOR IT IS IMPEACHABLE IN MY OPINION. If for no other reason than the harm's way it has put our young soldiers in not to say anything about the incompetence in doing your job. The Iraqi situation is getting dramatically worst daily and we have a tinderbox there ready to be lit and go up in flames. A Tiannmen Square as in China with the United States playing the role of the Chinese Government is what we are headed for I am afraid. That is all we need to be broadcast around the world- pictures of tanks and soldiers shooting on a mob of unarmed Iraqi citizens and that is where we are headed I fear. |
