US led War on Iraq - A progress report

Not Prepared?          by Sophia Barkat

Here's a link where a top US military General says US was not prepared for the developments in Iraq: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid=542&e=37&u=/ap/20030328/ap_on_g\

More like Vietnam?              by Cherrie lynn lipsett     (cherrie9@intercorp.com)

Cherrie forwarded this message that sparked much debate. Is the war on Iraq resembling Vietnam?

Re:  Cherrie's forwarded article  - Comparing the War on Iraq with Vietnam

There is no comparison. Unless you want to include our support of a corrupt puppet regime set up by the French, than I guess we're on the wrong side in Iraq. America the warmonger is a laughable joke. If Gore had won(don't even start with it) in 2000 and 9-11 happened I suppose that Afghanistan wouldn't have happened? I guess America should have just have turned the other cheek and chalk it up to our sins from the cold war. It's pretty obvious to me that twenty-five plus years of Saddam is far more responsible for this "resistance" we now face than anti-Americanism. The truth is Islam is but a spoiled child compared to the other major religions on earth. Islam hasn't experienced their version of a "reformation" yet. Islam stands today just as Christianity did about 1400 years into its existence, all or nothing. Saddam will not be the trigger for jihad against the west. The Muslim extremist know this, it's so much easier to blame the infidels and put off looking at their certain future which will be bloodshed amongst themselves. A wise man once told me that guns won't stop Muslim extremists their women will.

We shall see!

You are on the wrong side! There are not two sides in Iraq -there are three sides. Most people are against both Saddam and Bush. If America forces people to choose on the basis of "Those who are not for us are against us" -then it is America that is forcing people into the arms of Saddam.

captmingus wrote:
"America the warmonger is a laughable joke."

Perhaps -but one hell of a lot of people around the world have died laughing because of it. Do you have any idea of American history over the last sixty years?

How many periods (since 1940) can you identify (with dates) when America was at peace with the rest of the world?

When it wasn't overtly fighting Germans, Koreans and Vietnamese -or invading Grenada, it was covertly supporting vicious authoritarian governments in South America and Asia. It has continually supported Israel in kicking shit out of the Palestinians -and if that wasn't enough it also managed to have obscure "Wars" on Communism, Drugs and now Terrorism, all of which were used to justify a multitude of sins carefully held from the public eye.

Iran-gate:
"In late 1986 President Ronald Reagan became embroiled in what became known as the Iran-gate Scandal. It was discovered that the Reagan administration had been selling arms to the Islamic fundamentalist government in Iran in order to gain the release of American hostages in the Lebanon. The profits of the deal were then used to supply the anti-Marxist Contra guerrillas fighting in Nicaragua. "

How many American films contain images of people killing each other (compared to films without)? For many years, American TV and films were banned form showing a pubic hair -while the cutting of (female) throats was quite acceptable.

How many American citizens have been killed by gun toting citizens who have freaked out for some reason or another? How many American citizens have unjustly lost their lives in American execution chambers? How many (male) citizens believe they are Rambo -born to avenge and kill -even if they don't know exactly what or why?  Isn't American foreign policy based more on Rambo than on right?

captmingus wrote:

Afghanistan was an illegal invasion -and the international community should never have accepted it! It is acceptance of these double standards that builds the foundations for the current crisis.

captmingus wrote:
"I guess America should have just have turned the other cheek and chalk it up to our sins from the cold war."

No -it should have behaved like an adult -and taken responsible (and legal) action -not killing everybody in sight in a frenzy of revenge which only makes matters worse.

captmingus wrote:

Then you must be wearing blinkers! I have not been suffering 25 years of Saddam -but I have witnessed 50 years of American covert imperialism around the world!

captmingus wrote:

Oh boy -take a look in the mirror. American's are little kids who scream and shout and kill as soon as they get frustrated by things they do not understand!

captmingus wrote:

So what? You think that gives America the right to be sheriff, judge, jury, executioner and lawmaker around the world? What happened to the idea of separation of powers?

Do you have any idea how much your government is undermining fundamental American principles (and has been doing so for several years)?

captmingus wrote:

No -Bush will!

So put down your guns and send in the women! There seems little point in wise men talking to you if you will not listen to them.

It is a sure sign of fools and evil -when wisdom is corrupted and truth perverted......

US Military at it's test
Army over-stretched?      by Sophia Barkat

I just watched "Tim Russert Show" on CNBC where political and military experts said that the US Army - not Navy, Air Force etc - are most concerned about post-war Iraq, as they will be the only ones left to maintain Bush's Iraqi Coalition Government.

The Army is the only one left to keep the "law and order" - and they are already over-stretched in Iraq, Afghanistan and have only one division unengaged to take upon any new enemy.

Apparently the Pentagon has been vocal about it's dissatisfaction with Rumsfeld's plan or lack there of because of this reason. Now this raised huge questions about the post-war Allied Iraqi Government.

What it also does is - force the US-led coalition to use maximum force to win the war. Recently, Rumsfeld has been cited as saying that Saddam might use chemical weapons. It sort of gives one an excuse to drop something big on Baghdad, if you ask me.

Also, Baghdad has 100 miles of underground bunkers and tunnels where any kind of extreme warfare is possible - biological, chemical etc.

This scenario raises the questions : Is the War going very well? Will extreme force be used? Is the US Army expendable?

People in Pentagon requested more troops from Rumsfeld but were turned down. This means, they are signaling to Rumsfeld to get out of Iraq sooner than he had planned. It also means, Rumsfeld's Shock and Awe war
plan is lacking, and very dangerous for the US. It exposes the US homeland and interests worldwide to more attacks, with only one Army division to do anything if this happens.

If this continues, anyone in the Middle East can create an uprising to test the true strength of the US Military and more so the post-war Coalition Govt. in months to come.

Yes, this places both the US and the international community (EU and UN) in a difficult position. I guess the international community doesn't wish to be accused of doing nothing while people suffer in a post-war situation -
on the other hand they don't wish to be seen supporting the war -or encouraging America to continue such policies by always cleaning up after them.

Clearly, there are also economic implications -many countries would like to get their fingers in the pie regarding the profits of reconstruction -while of course America believes it has thhe right to the lions share.

There are probably too many unknown variables for the final balance between (economic, political and military) profit and loss to be made up yet -but it certainly seems that America has taken on a great risk -on several different levels.

Yes, British media like to focus on problems between Rumsfeld and the Pentagon (and perhaps British differences too).

Perhaps one should not forget that the (relative) dove Powell comes from the Pentagon -and hawk Rumsfeld is a businessman. Politicians are clever at pretending that their wisdom is saving us from the madness of the generals - but it could possibly be the opposite wayy around.

This of course was the excuse for the whole invasion. However, until now, nothing has been found -and certainly any evidence of their immanent use against America.

It seems difficult to imagine how American weapons could be defeated in a direct confrontation -but the situation does seem much more bloody than the planners expected (even if they won't admit it).

Despite 24 hour coverage -it still remains difficult to know exactly how things are proceeding. The propaganda machines are obviously working hard on both sides. One of the dangers of repressive systems is that participants are reluctant to tell the truth regarding failures. One wonders how much this effect is responsible for misleading information from Iraqi side -which until now has sometimes seemed more reliable than American statements. When the minister claims that the airport has been cleared of US troops -it is perhaps possible that the commander leading the attack has not dared to report back that he has failed. On the other hand -if the situation in Iraq does turn out to be a disaster for Britain and America -then this will probably be the result of both governments misleading their people. Until now, government policy on both sides of the Atlantic seems to be based more on wishful thinking and blind faith than on informed, rational debate.

Yes, Britain is over stretched too, so it seems from earlier reports.

Yes, even Afghanistan has not yet been fully pacified. Rumour has it that Kosovo is not exactly a success either.

Wolfowitz reassess occupation plan - defeat?    &nbbsp;  by Sophia Barkat

Recall Bush talk about occupying Iraq "as long as it takes"?

Looks like Wolfy and Co. have finally come to understand how difficult it will be to realize their dream. Here's the new 6-month plan:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid=679&ncid=742&e=1&u=/usatoday/20\

As much as I was opposed to the war, I wonder what the war amounts to if the Coalition of Peace cannot keep it's promise to Israel to liberate them of their fear - a pretty dumb idea it was too to incite more anti-American and anti-Israeli feelings and hope to establish peace.

Will Israel sleep easier knowing the cowboys are leaving town? For I would be if I were Israeli. "Don't make so much noise, Jr. We are trying to live longer!!"

Or will Israel hang on to the false friendship it's leaders have made with the defense lobby in the US? Ah, the gullible public

Re: Sophia's post - Wolfowitz reassesses plan...

But you (and the Yahoo article) are forgetting that in the previous efforts mentioned in the web reference the US was severely hampered by interference from international bodies such as the UN, the EU or NATO.

Apparently, one UN spokesman has claimed that Iraq was a "poisoned chalice". So perhaps this time the US will be able to demonstrate its prowess by solving the problem alone.

According to the BBC world service radio, the al-Jazeera office has been hit by a rocket. An unfortunate accident perhaps, however, it seems that the rocket also hit al-Jazeera office in Kabul during the "liberation" of Afghanistan.

Question marks also hang over the strike on the Chinese embassy (which was also accused of spying) during the Serbian strikes.

If the Americans really do use weapons that can shoot the pimple from a gnats arse from half a continent away -then perhaps they might try finding a plausible excuse for the growing mountain of civilian victims. Otherwise people might be forced to conclude that white man speak with forked tongue (or maybe thinks with forked brain).
