Israel and Palestine
The Present Common Grounds by Sophia Barkat Here's a link about how Arabs and Jews understand each other quite well: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/2963404.stm "At the end of May nearly 300 Israelis - half Israeli Arabs, half Jews - travelleed to Auschwitz to learn more about the Holocaust and try to help heal the wounds of the present conflict in the Middle East," says the Liz Carney of BBC. "They hugged each other and sobbed - a group of Israeli Jews and Israeli Arabbs together sharing the pain of the Holocaust, " she follows. It's a good sign but nothing new. Jews and Arabs have been trying to work together in Israel for years now. Roadmap to Peace by Sophia Barkat I've heard a lot about the roadmap to peace, but have yet to seen how the map of the two nations will look like. Any ideas? by Guy (moviemaniababy@yahoo.com) re: Sophia's post Check http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/middle_east/conflict/peace_sec3.html http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/middle_east/conflict/map.html by Sophia Barkat re: Guy's post I looked at the map. It's a map describing which areas belong to whom. I am still looking for "Proposed Plan" Maps: Oslo Accord Map vs. Barak's Map vs. Bush Jr.'s Map. I understand that Rabin had been the first Israeli Prime Minister to propose a "local" government for Palestine -- with police etc. Barak proposed a Palestinian State. It was stressed that Arafat wanted "Right of Return" of Arabs to Israel and that was not something Israel was willing to accept. Bush Jr.'s plan says that Right of Return is OUT. That the Palestinians have to live inside the four different areas that are now "occupied territories" with walls cutting off each from Israel and roads joining the four areas. Abbas has agreed to it. Sharon has won. And the Hamas and right-wing Israelis are both angry at their respective leaders. The Right-wing Israelis are against a Palestinian State. The Hamas are against an Israeli State. They cannot both be pleased. One wonders if both such radical groups cannot be "de-militarized" before undertaking the final step. And as I say this, I don't mean that I support Israel's recent attack in Palestinian Territories. I mean the Arabs disarming their own and the Israeli's sticking to a Peace Plan that is acceptible to Arabs. |
