Human Rights Watch Report on Civilian Death in Iraq War

by Sophia Barkat

The Human Rights Watch group brought out a 147 page report on the Civilian Death Toll in Iraq by the Coalition Forces, blaming the toll largely on the Coalition forces merciless cluster bombing of civilian areas in Iraq.

"Off Target: The Conduct of the War and Civilian Casualties in Iraq", as the report is titled, also details numerous violations of international humanitarian law by Iraqi forces, including their use of human shields, the abuse of Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems, the use of anti-personnel landmines, and the deployment of weapons and other military equipment in mosques, hospitals and archaeological and cultural sites," reports Jim Lobe of OneWorld US (http://us.oneworld.net).

U.S. and British forces dropped 13,000 cluster munitions on Iraq, containing a total of nearly two million submunitions, or bomblets, that killed or wounded more than 1,000 civilians. There is no official Pentagon count of actual civilians killed in Iraq, however, as the US stopped reported enemy civilian casualties since the Vietnam War.

The London-based Medact, the British affiliate of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, concluded that a total of between 5,700 and 7,356 civilians were killed between March 20 and May 1 as a result of hostilities.
