US-Iraq War
Did US Greed Cause Terrorism? by Larry S. Rolirad © 2004 Greedy United States businesses and terrible US foreign policies by both major political parties have caused much of the current terrorism in the Middle East. It was years of exploitation by American businesses in the Middle East that have caused resentment toward the US and its citizens. American businesses have sided with tyrants and dictators for the past seventy-five years. These dictators and tyrants have oppressed their people with the United State's blessings. The Shah of Iran was a tyrant and a mass-murderer but he was a friend of the US in the seventies. Saddam, the mass-murderer and tyrant, was also a friend of the US while Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush were presidents in the eighties. During the 1980s, the Reagan and Bush administrations, using the CIA, gave billions of dollars worth of weapons and training to the most fundamentalist, extremist Islamic groups that the US could find to fight the Soviet military. Osama bin Laden was one of those trained by, and fought with the CIA during those years. After the Soviet Union was expelled from Afghanistan in 1989, the US pulled out leaving the ruthless Taliban to gain control over the country. Once in power, the Taliban brutally suppressed the rest of the population. The US is responsible for siding with the wealthy classes in most of the Middle Eastern countries who in turn kept their citizens in total poverty. And out of poverty came resentment and hatred. Combine corrupt US businesses with horrible US foreign policy and you get terrorism. If we demanded that the wealthy classes and the dictators of Middle East countries share the bounty of their nations with their people they would perhaps have a better opinion of the US. Or at least they wouldn't hate the US. Add all of the above to the US's blind support of Israel and you have a combination for disaster. In a CBS "60 Minutes" report on November 17, 2003, they ran a story about a small African country called Equatorial Guinea that recently discovered oil. All of the proceeds of the oil go to the corrupt American oil company and the corrupt dictator in that African country. The dictator is President Obiang Nguem Mbasogo. Just like Saddam, Mbasogo received almost 100% of the vote in his last one-man election. And just like Saddam, he takes all of the wealth of the country and shares none with the people. Exxon-Mobil is guilty of propping up this thug and giving him hundreds of millions of dollars. This will also lead to long-term resentment and hatred toward the United States because it is a US company that is exploiting the country and propping up a dictator. And from that hatred will spawn more and more terrorism. The uncaring CEOs of Exxon-Mobil don't give a damn about the people in that country. They are apparently void of any social consciousness. All they care about is making billions of dollars and to hell with people in that country and to hell with Americans who will be the targets for future terrorist attacks from that country. The cycle goes on and on. The answer is simple. We must respect human life all over the world RIGHT NOW. American businesses and politicians must be forced to be socially conscious. Our priorities as a people and a country must be to foster good will, not have hatred to be our leader's rallying cry. The US is reaping what they have sowed for the past seventy-five years. Unfortunately, corrupt businesses and corrupt politicians have long ago spent their ill-gotten money while they were creating the terrorism that the common man has to deal with today. Wake up people. The greatest enemy is not outside our borders, but within. And the biggest enemies to our country are in Washington, DC. We must remove the Bush regime or our country, and our future generations, will be constant targets to more GOP-generated terrorism. Finally, how would YOU feel if another country took all of our country's resources and propped up a dictator to oppress and kill you? How would you feel knowing that all of our country's resources were being stolen while the US population was left in complete poverty? How would you feel if you, or all of your loved ones, were abused, oppressed, tortured, and murdered by a ruler who was put in charge of the US by a foreign country? This is exactly what US corporations and US politicians have done in the Middle East for the past seventy-five years. Would you just lie back and take the abuse, the oppression, and the death? Or would you want to strike back at those who are responsible for your plight? The United States businesses and self-serving foreign policy are also guilty of exploiting others all around the world. Republicans will say that was 'good' business, but how can anything be 'good' business when it resulted in such evils? I know that most of you would find it impossible to put yourselves in someone else's shoes, but that is the only way that you will start to understand the behavior of those we have helped to oppress all over the world. People who call me a traitor, or make other derogatory remarks attacking me for speaking out against greedy US corporations and misguided US foreign policies, fail to open their minds to the root causes of terrorism. I am an American who loves my country. I am also a former award winning American soldier. I served my country well. And I will continue serving my country as long as I live. I believe that businesses must be honest, ethical and have social consciousness. I also believe that politicians must be honest, ethical, and have social consciousness. Behavior from either that does not live up to these standards will always result in the dire consequences that we are having to deal with today.
