Health Care Reform in the US
New Hospital Emergency Room Rules Being Proposed forwarded by Cherrie Lynn Lippsett I'm not sure if I am for this or against it. The hospitals are having a real problems this is true and so is Medicare and Medicaid with people going to the hospital emergency room when they could have waited for a doctor's appointment or could have gone to a minor medical facility. Part of the problem is bad doctors who patients don't want to see for problems they think are serious. Also a part of the problems is people going to the emergency ward for all kind of just home first aid. Most Americans any more don't know how to do home first aid. They rush to a doctor or a hospital for the least little thing. This is partly because they have insurance and think the visits are free and partly because the doctors' do encourage people to come for everything even a minor cold which doctors can do nothing for. Doctors will have you come for a follow up visit in 2 weeks for nothing! Also there are a lot of illegal immigrants who usually just go to the hospitals and never pay their bills. But usually they wait until they have a real problems. In border towns in Texas the hospitals are going broke because of the illegal immigrants they care for and who never pay. I would like to learn more about what the bill says. this article didn't say too much in my opinion. Anyone else want to talk on this issue? See http://groups.yahoo.com/group/QuietPolyJuryFury/message/2130 for the forwarded link. by Sophia Barkat re: Cherrie's post I think it's the problem of Hospitals that they send all incoming patients to the ER. If only they can divide the patients into ER and "general care", and maintain resources for that it would be fine, though I know the reason they are showing to cut "general care" is lack of resources. I think that people with injuries go to the hospital as they don't know how to diagnose their injuries. It's best to see a doctor. Hospital ERs are probably over-worked in many places and some may need more doctors rather than an excuse to lay-off doctors. I'm sure all hospitals are businesses and don't want to take care of patients who can't pay. It seems that universal healthcare for US citizens will solve a huge part of this problem, but as long as illegal immigrants exist and they do, it probably requires a more inclusive approach. Otherwise hospitals will keep facing problems in many parts of the US. Perhaps extending the universal healthcare to include all taxpayers makes this even better for hospitals faced by patient delinquencies. But ultimately it may be better to make illegal immigrants legal to solve the problem. by MrsDew4@adelphia.net I wrote my friend George Jr. and his invisible friend Dick about this very subject just yesterday. I caught wind of this subject on a news broadcast and could not believe my ears. Now emergency rooms overloaded with patients with earaches and colds is old news. I can remember as a young child going to the emergency room in the early AM with a severe case of bursitis in the my shoulder. I waited hours in agony because of the number of people there with illnesses that were not emergencies. And I can still remember that the majority of them were minorities. There status regarding insurance I obviously did not know. Now that I am much older and disabled, I have a different viewpoint - though not necessarily opposite. My only source of insurance is Medicare and Medicaid. When I am sick, I don't go to the emergency room, I go to my regular doctor - if I can see her - usually I can only seee a physician assistant like most people. Thankfully I have Medicaid to help pay for my prescriptions as I take over 100 pills a week. Also, Medicare is not free - it is not expensive but relative to my SSI it is costly. Now I know this is off topic, but I want to pipe in that not all people with these insurance abuse them. I personally avoid emergency rooms at all cost. I think many health care providers have acute care facilities that act as mini-emergency rooms that you can access after hours that are much more efficient and professional. |
