Bush Champion of Human Rights? Not!

(May 20, 2005) British and American newspapers published photos Friday showing an imprisoned Saddam Hussein clad only in his underwear and washing his laundry, prompting an angry U.S. military to launch an investigation and the Red Cross to say the pictures may violate the Geneva Conventions.

President Bush: "I don't think a photo inspires murderers. These
people are motivated by a vision of the world that is backward and
barbaric."

Since when is a right to privacy and decency considered backward and
barbaric? Because Hollywood has made nudity a standard in movie
offerings, and Sports Illustrated makes a sport out of scantily clad
models once a year, and Victoria's Secret parades their models
down runways in lingerie in prime time, and television censors for years
have allowed partial nudity on TV, and young pop stars use their
sexuality to sell their music, because on the Internet can be found
all manner of nudity and pornography — this gives us the right to
thumb our noses at another culture and accuse them of being barbaric
and backward? Who are we, nay, who is George W. Bush to judge
another culture and their standard for decency and privacy?

Once again I'm shamed by this Administration's callous and
arrogant disregard for human rights and the rights of another culture, and I'm shamed by the voters of this nation who decided to give the
world four more years of the same.
