Is NATO History? by Sophia Barkat With Richard Perle hurling ridiculous remarks at the French, it seems that Europe is taking it seriously that NATO may not be enough. Belgium, France, Germany and Luxembourg announce the creation of a new defense alliance. Here's the link: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20030429/wl_nm/eu_ defence_dc_2 Seeing how governments if these countries might prioritize allocating military resources and information to this new alliance, it seems they can only cut down on other alliances such as the NATO. Should we blame this on George Bush Jr. entirely? Probably not, though he did expose obvious rifts. One might wonder how NATO functioned all this time with the US and Europe fighting each other economically, especially with such spy programs as Project Echelon active, with France and Germany competing for oil with the US. It would appear NATO was used to counter attacks on Western Europe or the USA by another other country, but what with international politics, it's impossible these days to get any consensus on military action. As such, it's probably not meaningful to have large organizations, but to form alliances with people who have a vested interest in your economy. As such the smaller alliance created by the 4 EU countries makes sense. I wonder what impact this rift in NATO will have on the EU. Namely, the ex-WARSAW Bloc now part of both the NATO and the EU might be facing an embarrassing dilemma. Should they appear pro-US-UK or pro-France-Germany? NATO has bases all over Western Europe. The US itself has military bases outside of NATO - in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, Asia, Pacific. |
