Bad for Ecosystem
Navy use of Sonar might be harmful to ecosystem by Sophia Barkat Apparently the Navy's use of mid-range sonar might be responsible for the death of porpoise : http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/122284_whales16.html Sonar is simply sound reflected off the surface of materials. They are used by submarines and ships to find the depth of the ocean, and thus to help them navigate safely. A possible cause of death by use of sonar is that they caused bursting of the ear and related tissue in the porpoise, which live inside the water. Here's part of the article: ----------------------------------------------------------------- "Witnesses in area waters reported seeing scores of porpoises leaping from the water on May 5, apparently trying to escape the sound. When the bursts of sound became audible to humans, killer whales in the area bunched near the shore of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and milled around, Bain said in an e-mail report distributed by the Orca Conservancy. As top predators, killer whales "don't have a flight response," said Fred Felleman of the Orca Conservancy. "They're not used to needing a flight response." The sound was "clearly a great source of stress," he said. The Navy has confirmed that the Shoup, an Everett-based guided-missile destroyer, was using mid-frequency sonar, called SQS-53C, as part of a quarterly training exercise on May 5. "Neither visual lookouts nor the ship's instruments detected the presence of marine mammals in the immediate area," Cmdr. Karen Sellers said in a statement Tuesday. The sonar sweep ended when Canadian authorities reported complaints from small-boat operators, she said." by Cherrie Lynn Lipsett Re: Sophia's post The US does not care what it kills when training for or engaging in war. It will not learn to live within the boundaries of decency. It care's not for other people or animals and does not it seems even care for its citizens any more if they should disagree with its policies and should speak up. The US is the most barbaric country in the world. THEY JUST DON'T SEEM TO GET IT! IT IS NOW THE TIME OF INTELLIGENCE AND COOPERATION THAT RULES THE EARTH NOT THE SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST! I wonder how this fits in with the Bible which the King Bush likes to say is his only teacher- man was put here to be care takers of the earth. Tenants only so to speak. But the Christian Coalition does the Bible like they do laws, ignores the parts that don't fit in with their plans. |
