Slavery in Present Day America
Federal Prison Industries Inc. by Sophia Barkat I just watched US Representative Peter Hoekstra (R-Michigan) speaking about slave labor in prisons on CSPAN today. US businesses now hire jailed criminals just like the government in China. People in jail work for 23cents to maximum of $1.15/hr. Nor are the sentenced criminals protected by OSHA. The Federal Prison Industries Inc. run by the State Department grew 215% last year. It gives competition to companies in almost every industry, getting preferential business from the Government. As a result, whenever a foreign corporation or a US-based corporation wants to find a manufacturer, the Federal Prison Industries Inc. gets the business. Why? They have, by way of their unfair labor cost-advantage, always saved money for their clients. So you can imagine how it may affect every single industry in the US, including the defense industry and it does. Federal Prison Industries is diversified - furniture to shoes to parts for tanks. Congressman Hoekstra complained that Federal Prison Industries Inc. was driving businesses out of his own constituencies. They were as responsible for people losing jobs in America as due to globalization and operate in most of the States. Created with the excuse of training criminals for life after prison, they have become a cheap source of labor, and one that mocks corporations which must pay minimum wage. Clearly this business must be stopped not only because it is slavery but also because it unfairly drives companies out of business in America. |
