China sends another high-level military delegation to Cuba

by Cherrie Lynn Lipsett

A senior Chinese military official and a communist party official visited Cuba last week to discuss strengthening ties with the island's communist-ruled government.

China has stepped up military exchanges with Cuba and has provided
military equipment to Fidel Castro's regime.

Lt. Gen. Tan Yuexin, director general of China's Central Military Commission Administration held talks with Cuban officials on "aspects
of the national and territorial defense system in Cuba," according to press reports.

Tan led a delegation of military officials who met with Cuban military Vice Minister and Chief of General Staff Alvaro Lopez Miera. Cuba's troop readiness was among the topics discussed.

Yu Junbo, undersecretary of the Chinese communist party, also participated and told reporters in Havana of the importance of strengthening ties with Cuba.

Beijing views its support for the Castro regime as a means to pressure the United States against selling arms to Taiwan.
