Disturbing Economics Disturbing Economics of Bush's War on Iraq by Sophia Barkat Here's the link that ties Halliburton to the spoils of War : http://news.yahoo.com/fc?tmpl=fc&cid=34&in=business&cat=halliburton by Trevor Batten Re: Tony & Eric - disturbing economics Clever! Who says capitalism is opposed to socialism. Soon there will be lots more "reconstruction" to do in the area -with Israel as partner - -all financed by the international community and local oil in the name of the people! There's no profit like no-profit...... and America rules the world through social engineering! The Iraqis will pay for it no doubt, with oil money. Considering Bush proposed $75 billion dollars for the War. Iraq's GDP is $59 billion dollars: http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/iz.html Exports of Oil (mostly) and Imports under the Food for Oil program are: $15.8 billion f.o.b. (2001 est.) Exports - commodities: crude oil Exports - partners: US 46.2%, Italy 12.2%, France 9.6%, Spain 8.6% (2000) Imports: $11 billion f.o.b. (2001 est.) Imports - commodities: food, medicine, manufactures Imports - partners: France 22.5%, Australia 22%, China 5.8%, Russia 5.8% (2000) Debt - external: $62.2 billion (2001 est.) Economic aid - recipient: $327.5 million (195) (1995) According to Giovanni Di Stefano's article "Iraq and the Nowhereman" By avv. Giovanni Di Stefano: http://www.lospettro.it/pagina684.htm "From January 2002 to July 2002 the nation of Iraq exported 1.5 million barrels of oil per day. The US accepted 611,000 barrels. Since 1996 the UN has governed the output of Iraq. At first Iraq was permitted to sell $2 billion of oil every six months. In 1998 at the suggestion of----- USA---- it was increased to $5.26 billion. In 1999 at the suggestion of---USA--- the ceiling was removed completely. There have been furious disagreements over the price Iraq was allowed to charge per barrel. Since the Food for Oil Programme commenced Iraq has only received $27 billion which if calculated is equal to 60 cents per Iraqi person per day! And then Iraq is criticized for not passing on the revenue to its citizens? Try buying food in any country for 60 cents per day! War for oil? Iraq is sitting on reserves of at least 150 billion barrels the second biggest after---Saudi Arabia! And who is also on the US target after Iraq? Yes, Saudi Arabia! Then tell us that this is not a war for oil?" by Trevor Batten Re: Sophia's post So who needs land when there's oil and reconstruction contracts to be had? Citizens are advised to squander their savings in order to get rich quick! Of course -since America left the gold standard, money is only worth what some fool is prepared to pay for it! Bush nulls Iraq's business contracts prior to War by Sophia Barkat Is this fair? What about legal business contracts? http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid=1514&e=66&u=/afp/20030411/wl_mi\ deast_afp/iraq_war_economy_debt_030411071823 Iraq owes $338 billion to businesses and nations worldwide. Doesn't Bush has an obligation to pay some of it? Or are businesses and nations supposed to have business insurance? Oh...poor Insurance Companies on this one.... Business Insurance will get more expensive. New Unforeseen calamity - Bush Administration War Machine. by Trevor Batten Re: Sophia's post - Bush nulls Iraq's business contracts prior to War At present (on BBC radio) some (English) guy (from a consultancy bureau) is supporting the quick dishing out of commercial American contracts to rebuild the country for the sake of the Iraqi people. It might be a little more convincing if the Americans used equal vigour to prevent the theft and destruction of the country before their very eyes. The denials/excuses provided by US spokespersons until now would be quite at home in a Monty Python sketch if they weren't so disgustingly, horribly, tragic. Unfortunately, almost all the propaganda in support of this war seems to have the same surrealistic madness as a common theme. If people truly believe what they say -then the world has apparently been taken over by lunatics! The Iraqi minister of information is beginning to seem like a realist in comparison with the current bunch in the White House. by Duncan Reilly Secret Bechtel document -- it IS about oil! Here's a forwarded message. Oil is involved: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/QuietPolyJuryFury/message/875 Oil Again by Trevor Batten The BBC has announced that oil is flowing again in Southern Iraq -while it has never stopped in the North -despite the fact that there's is no legal agreement about who represents the owner -and who has legal control over the oil fields. Dispute is also possible over who has the right to represent Iraq in OPEC. Of course, only a nasty suspicious person would ever dream of doubting American intentions, when the new occupiers of Iraq find getting the oil wells running more important than getting the electricity and water supplies to function in the cities. Cynical people might imagine that financial profit was more important than human lives. by Hairy1997@aol.com Re: Trevor's post - Oil Again Or to see that the hospital have much needed supplies to continue helping the so severely wounded citizens of the country we are trying to free from oppression. There seems to be a contradiction here somewhere. Greedy people DO think that financial profit IS more important than human lives. Greedy Odd People (GOP) who are running this poor country of ours or RUINING it. And ruining the entire planet, too. Something needs to be done and quickly so it doesn't continue to spread and ruin the entire world. Iraqis to not get access to Oil Trevor Batten Euronews has just run an item (sat. Apr 26) from France 2 -which claims that the oil ministry in Baghdad is completely untouched by bombs -however, despite the fact that it was guarded by American troops as soon as they arrived -most of the documents concerning exploration and reserves have been removed (by American troops was the suggestion from some employees). Clearly the buildings have not been looted as all the furniture is present and unmolested -only documents and computer tapes are missing (according to France 2). The report expressed fears that perhaps the Iraqis would not be given full access to their oil. It's not about Oil? by Sophia Barkat To remind everyone that the US stay in the Middle East was not over Powell scolded Syria again: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030504/ap_on_re_mi_ea/powell &cid=540&ncid=716 Powell also established the Iraqi Oil Ministry - http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/afp/20030503/wl_mideast_afp/iraq\ _worldwrap_030503231144&e=1 It seems that Syria is next on the US agenda. It seems that bin Laden's plan to establish a Muslim Empire, as is alleged by the US, is being replaced by another kind of empire. One built to get cheap oil. Brings back memories from the "golden years" of the British rule of India. Right-wing Groups coerce MCI to fire Danny Glover by Sophia Barkat The forwarded message from MoveOn.org is linked here, dated May 19th, 2003: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/QuietPolyJuryFury/message/1734 MCI recently fired Glover as a spokesperson for MCI. The reason was that Glover had opposed the Iraq War for which right-wing groups had put pressure on MCI to fire him. It should be noted that MoveOn.org members had organized a letter-writing campaign to tell MCI not to fire Glover, and that MCI had hired Glover back soon after. More fodder by Sophia Barkat Here's the link: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ft/20030530/bs_ft/1051390437929 On top of previous count, Halliburton got $500 dollars worth of deals from Iraq in past two years -- while Saddam was in power! And will have limitless earnings now. Wolfowitz says Iraq war was for oil ! by Carl Gauss Wolfowitz is a valuable asset after all ! http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,970331,00.html by Sophia Barkat re: Carl's post -- Wolfowitz... That's quite brave of Wolfowitz. Wonder what the relationship between him and the Administration must be like that he went and blabbered. Bremmer for quick privatization of Iraqi Oil by Cherrie Lynn Lipsett Here's a forwarded report titled "US convenes Iraqi council with aim of grabbing oil" by Bill Vann of the World Socialist Website: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/QuietPolyJuryFury/message/1920 The original site is at: http://www.wsws.org by Sophia Barkat - Bremmer for quick privatization of Iraqi Oil re: Cherrie's post To elaborate on Cherrie's post the Bill Vann report says that in the name of creating democracy in Iraq, the Bush Administration has gone along and established a 25 member interim government that has been handpicked by Washington's administrator in Iraq, Paul L. Bremmer. The report says, "It is to include right-wing, pro-US exiles, led by the convicted bank embezzler Ahmad Chalabi, Washington-backed Kurdish groups, and at least one Shiite Islamic group. The Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq told Bremer that it would not decide until Saturday whether it would participate. Its hesitancy reflects the growing hostility toward the US- British occupation among Iraq’s oppressed Shiite majority." Also, it states, "At a Tuesday press briefing in Baghdad, Bremer spelled out his determination to push through a wholesale privatization of Iraq’s oil industry and the rest of its large state-owned sector before Iraqis are given any opportunity to vote for a government or express their attitude toward such sweeping economic changes. He and other US officials have acknowledged that there is widespread popular sentiment against the denationalization of oil and its takeover by foreign-owned multinationals." "Privatization is obviously something we have been giving a lot of thought to,” Bremer said. “When we sit down with the council ... it is going to be on the table," the article quotes Bremmer. David Kay too? by Sophia Barkat Remember David Kay? The man who said Scott Ritter was lying about there being no credible evidence of Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq.... Turns out the man the CIA has given the lead to oversee WMD search in Iraq is not free of the taint of the "Disturbing Economics" of this war that is so characteristic of the Bush Administration. Apparently, Kay works for SAIC. According to Bill Berkowitz of "Working for Change": http://www.globalexchange.org/countries/iraq/1038.html "SAIC, heavily involved with homeland security projects, has already acquired several reconstruction contracts in Iraq, and Kay and a number of other former company employees are firmly planted in country. The company "has been running the Iraqi Reconstruction and Development Council (IRDC) since the body was established by the Pentagon in February," Dauenhauer and Lobe reported. "SAIC is also a subcontractor under Vinnell Corporation, another big defense contractor that has long been in charge of training for the Saudi National Guard, hired to reconstitute and train a new Iraqi army." And SAIC is also running the recently established Iraqi Media Network (IMN) project, whose charge was to "was to put together a new information ministry, complete with television, radio and a newspaper, and the content that would make all three attractive to average Iraqis." With people like David Kay holding positions of influence Americans have a need to be careful what they wish for, or they just might get it..... |
