Bush & Empire The Madness of Empire forwarded by Duncan Reilly Another interesting article from a 'conservative' writer. http://www.dailyreckoning.com/home.cfm?loc=/body_headline.cfm&qs=id=3024 by Trevor Batten Re: Duncan's post Yes, I just heard on the BBC world service that the Japanese were beginning to get worried by the fact that they were a US protectorate and this might get them involved in things that they'd rather not get involved with (i.e. conflict with North Korea). This was leading them to ask how they got themselves into this position. As far as I can see, the Roman Empire seems to have made a great impact on European consciousness -it seems to represent some (fictive) golden age, when the whole of Europe spoke one language and lived under one law (with the barbarians held safely outside). I suspect that this is indeed an important underlying factor underlying imperialism -which has lead to periodic attempts to rebuild the Roman Empire (for example by Charlemain, Napoleon and Hitler -with the EU representing the most recent atttempt) both at home and abroad. The term "fascist" is derived from the bundle of rods used as a badge of office by those responsible for keeping order on the streets of Rome. So, in that sense, it is possible that European culture has an in-built tendency towards "fascism". Personally, I can imagine that if people continue to defend Israel on the grounds that it is a democracy -then other countries in the region will not be very tempted to support the introduction of democracy in the area. However, by forwarding this article, Duncan has now caused me to worry about my apparently conservative views......
