Peaceful Activism
No Activists invited to honor Shirin Abadi at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert by Sophia Barkat On Dec 21st 2003 the Nobel Peace Prize Concert 2003 was aired (Sunday at 6 p.m. EST) on the A&E cable channel, hosted by Michael Douglas and his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones. The concert was held in honor of 2003 Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi of Iran on Saturday, Dec 20th, and comprised of performances by musicians and singers from all over the world. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20031220/ap_on_en_mu/ people_mcgraw_3 I saw it on TV so I thought I should comment. Apart from the numerous occasions that the performers and MCs mentioned that Shirin Ebadi is a great woman for rising up against Islamic fundamentalism, you wouldn't know from this show was honoring activism or human rights. Where were the activists who she works with? Why was there no mention of the War on Iraq and other such symbols of aggression in the world. Also were all the performers anti-War? or Pro-Peace? Would for e.g. Michael Douglas or Faith Hill, who performed, say that were opposed to violence -- whether led by fundamentalist Iran or by arrogant States such as the US Government run by Bush? What is the point of parading behind a prize and a woman if you do not understand what peace is or if there is no prize for activism and dissent in your own countries? The fact that every world leader or activist has to line up for the Nobel Prize is a shame. Where are the medals for being a dissident? But only the medals for dying to protect the protectors of multinational corporations? Why is Kucinich the only Democratic Presidential Candidate who understands why the defense lobby really exists? Why is everyone else compliant with the idea that the defense lobby is very effective about protecting US lives when they couldn't do anything to stop 911 and instead go around selling weapons to whomever and wherever? Why does no one give medals to people who question hate and inequality? Where is the Media attention for activists of civil rights like Malcom X or the Black Panther movement and why are they portrayed to be evil when they have run social programs to save countless poor people? Who can deny the positive effect these people have had in society other than the people who wish to destroy social programs or pander to the Hegelians in society? There is no peace prize in the US or the UK or Bangladesh. Just prizes to honor the dead soldiers and martyrs who have risked their lives so that we may enjoy our real estate and cars and televisions and movies.
