911 al-Qaeda

Airliners and al-Qaeda’s Mission
by Andrew R. Thomas

I believe al-Qaeda achieved all that it wanted to and more on 9/11, but for reasons not often discussed. Al-Qaeda is not about crippling our economy or hindering our freedoms. What they have always wanted is a response. September 11 ultimately delivered it to them. That is, the U.S. is squarely involved in a war on Islam around the world. The WTC attack in '93, the embassy bombings in Africa, and the assault on the USS Cole each failed to lure the U.S. into a "war on Islam." 9/11 finally did.

Al-Qaeda is merely the most recent manifestation of a 150-year old movement that has had at its centerpiece the removal of 'princes'- to quote Al-afghani, the Thomas Jefferson of Islamic extremism. Since the whittling away of the Ottoman Empire, Islamists have sought to rid themselves of moderate leaders who sided with the West while keeping down any return to traditional Islamic ways. Current examples are The House of Faud, the Kuwaiti Emir, Asaad in Syria, Saddam Hussein (until a few weeks ago), Mubarak in Egypt, Musharraf in Pakistan, among others. For generations, Islamists tried to overthrow these kinds of regimes but were killed, imprisoned, or forced into exile by them. If alive, Bin Laden was the happiest of all humans when Saddam was captured. The U.S. did something Islamic extremists had been trying to accomplish for 25 years!

The last decades have seen a kind of 'road show,' where these Islamists must now wage war from abroad against their arch-enemy: the princes. Following the assassination of Sadat the crackdown on Islamists around the world in the late 70’s, extremists were forced out of their home countries. Some went to the West, others to Iran and others still to Afghanistan to fight against the Soviets. In the early 1990's, following the end of the Cold War and the U.S. victory in the Gulf War, Islamists realized their tactics were not working. Iran was no longer as extreme as it had been, and the U.S. was now firmly entrenched in the Mideast and Central Asia supporting the princes. The Islamists set out to find other ways to defeat their foes.

Since then, the goal of the extremists has been to provoke non-Muslim nations into a war against Muslims. Look at who has been attacked by Islamists most recently: India’s parliament in December '01; Australians at the Bali nightclub; Russians at the Moscow theater; English banks in Istanbul. To no one’s surprise, each of these nations is now firmly involved in the war on terror, AKA, the war on Islam.

At the core, al-qaeda et. al. desire to lure the world powers into a global war on Islam that will create upheaval and force moderate Muslims around the world to have a "come to Allah moment.” In other words, compel the majority of Muslims, which are moderate, to get off the fence and side with the extremists rather than support the princes. This is ultimately a battle for the heart and minds of moderate Muslims around the world. We in the non-Muslim world are merely pawns that are used to enhance the position and credibility of the extremists. Every American, Indian, Russian, British bomb that kills a Muslim- whether they are extreme or not- forces the moderates to choose sides. The big question is: Will moderates continue to support the princes and their friends in the West who kill Muslims or will they side with the traditional tenants of Islam and the extremists?

The belief is that Muslims will one day throw off the shackles of the princes and their Western Allies and unify at the extreme. Then and only then, is global jihad and victory possible over the Jews, Christians, Hindus, and every other non-believer.

To maintain credibility while the battle for hearts and minds rages, al-qaeda must demonstrate to the "fence sitters" that it still has global reach. This is why aviation remains a prime target. Since 9/11, known plots against aviation have included shoe bomber Richard Reid; the attempted shoot-down of an Israeli charter jet in Africa in November 2002; and the recent discovery at  Riyadh International Airport of two small aircraft loaded with explosives that were hours away from being flown into a British Airways 747. There have been others. Blowing up airliners shows moderates what can be done better than almost any other single event. It gives credence to claims about the vulnerabilities of the West and their Muslim allies as well as al-qaeda’s ability to strike at the heart of their enemies.
